You might be surprised to find out that your dentist does not have to join their local, or state society- both of which are components of the American Dental Association, states Dr. Marks. Whether you dentist earns his degree as a DMD, or DDS, the training in United States schools is the same. The training includes restorative dentistry (fillings), endodontics (root canals),periodontics (gum diseases), oral surgery (extractions and implants), orthodontics (tooth straightening), oral pathology (diseases in the mouth), radiology (x rays), pedodontics (children's dentistry), and prosthodontics (dentures, crowns, bridges).
So if the training is the same, why join the Associations, asks Dr. Marks.......... FINISH -->
Once you graduate school, the next day there are new advancements in the field of dentistry. Local, State, and the American Dental Association are the Societies that represents professional memberships for licensed dentists and their staff. The Associations help member dentists stay on top of the latest advances in dentistry, so that they can give their patients the best care available.
The Associations also lobby local and national governments to pass legislation that benefit citizen patients. State Dental Associations, such as the Connecticut State Dental Association, support activities such as the "MOM" - Missions of Mercy, where dentists and other allied dental professionals give free dental care to those in need. This way access for all citizens to dental care is available.
There recurring monthly and annual meetings for dentists that constantly give continuing education courses, as well as examples of the latest in dental equipment and supplies. Many study groups are also supported. The ADA also has a program to endorse consumer dental products, making sure the products are safe and effective.
So........if your dentist is not in his State Dental Association, or the American Dental Association, it doesn't mean he/she can't fill your tooth, or diagnose periodontal disease, but wouldn't you rather have a dentist who was on the cutting edge of his profession, with access to the newest technologies............. We all know the answer. If you want see a dentist who is a member of his Dental Local, State, and National Associations, please CONTACT US.
