Here are some facts to know before you journey down this trail, or swim down this coral head.
- In general, there are over the counter products, which are the weakest in strength. A further negative is that these products can irritate the gums, and cause a lot of sensitivity in teeth with recession, or exposed root surfaces, or failing fillings.
- Whitening type toothpaste is easy to find, but is abrasive on the gums (causing recession), and tooth enamel (enamel does not regrow!), and can cause sensitivity.
- The next type of product is given to a patient by their dentist, to take home, AFTER a tooth and gum examination. Custom trays are made to fit the teeth, and the bleaching agent is placed in the trays. The concentration of bleach can be stronger than the over the counter types, but involving wearing the trays for a period of hours, or over night. This type of product is known to cause vomiting and nausea in some people.
- Then there are the ‘in office’ bleaching procedures. The results are immediate, and take the least amount of time. Your teeth and gums are examined by the dentist, a protective barrier is placed over the gums to protect them, and a special halogen or LED light activates the bleaching product, which is carbamide or hydrogen peroxide (as are the other types of bleaching agents). The Zoom Bleaching system uses 3 or 4 fifteen minute sessions (one after the other), and tends to cause some sensitivity. The Lumacool system uses 3 sessions of 8 minutes, which minimizes or eliminates the sensitivity. Dr. Marks uses the Lumacool system, to keep the process quicker, with the least amount of sensitivity (if any at all).
Not for everyone
Some people are not candidates. Women who are lactating or pregnant, people allergic to peroxides, people with pre existing sensitive teeth or gums, people with active cavities, enamel that is worn, or roots with recession, are not the best candidates for this procedure.
