X rays are the eyes that allow dentists to see areas that can’t be seen by the naked eye: between our teeth, inside our teeth, under our gums, inside the bones of our jaws and skull etc. Your dentist can diagnose the eruption and position of incoming teeth, tooth impactions, dental cavities, the beginning of dental abscesses and infections, gum disease, jaw bone resorption leading to tooth loss, the extent of injuries (broken teeth or jaws), tumors, aid in the placement of dental implants, and diagnose osteoporosis in older patients. Living on the Earth, we are all exposed to natural radiation from space, radioactive substances within the Earth, the air we breathe & water we drink, and even in our foods and products we use daily. The amount of radiation from dental X rays is very small compared to our daily exposure, but the information we gain from its use can prevent disease, pain, and even save lives.
